Joseph Scattergood was a prominent Quaker, born in 1808 to James and Ann Scattergood of Philadelphia. He was interested in the history of conscientious objection, did work for native American groups in New York State, and started a fund which helped to establish a boarding school, Scattergood Seminary, in 1890. The Philadelphia chemical manufacturing firm of Carter & Scattergood was founded in 1834. It continued to do business under that name until 1911, when it was sold to the Henry Bower Chemical Manufacturing Company. The business was founded in 1754 by John Elliott, who had come to Philadelphia from Bolton, England, the previous year. Elliott originally dealt in glass, to which was added the silvering of mirrors. John Carter was a birthright Quaker, born in 1800 to John and Rebecca Carter of Deer Creek Monthly Meeting in Maryland. In 1834 he married Sarah Shoemaker, daughter of Nathan and Sarah Shoemaker of Philadelphia. They were members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting for the Southern District and had ten children.
